No. 2 UNC Stays Undefeated With Win Over Duke

Sept. 25, 2004

DURHAM, N.C. - The No. 2 North Carolina field hockey team rebounded from a halftime deficit to beat No. 5 Duke 2-1 Saturday afternoon at Williams Field. The victory kept the Tar Heels undefeated at 10-0 (2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), while Duke fell to 7-2 (1-1 ACC).

UNC's win gives the Tar Heels one point in the 2004-05 Carlyle Cup race, the annual all-sports competition between Carolina and Duke. The Tar Heels lead 1.5-0 after wins this fall by field hockey and volleyball.

Both Carolina goals came in the second half after the Blue Devils led 1-0 at the break. With just under 30 minutes to play, junior Karen Mann tipped in a shot by senior Laura Douglas to tie the game. Senior Kelsey Keeran had the winner with 15 minutes on the clock when she tipped in Carey Fetting-Smith's shot on a penalty corner, one of just three in the game for UNC.

Duke's goal came seven minutes before halftime when Amy Stopford scored, assisted by Johanna Bischoff.

Next up for the Tar Heels is a home game Sunday afternoon at Francis E. Henry Stadium. UNC hosts William & Mary at 1 p.m.
