Tar Heels Down Michigan State, 5-2
Sept. 11, 1999 PHILADELPHIA - The North Carolina field hockey team defeated Michigan State 5-2 in the second game of the 1999 Temple Invitational today at Geasey Field.
The Tar Heels Katie McDonald scored the winning goal off a penalty corner breaking a 2-2 tie with 5:55 remaining in the game. Abby Martin, who scored two goals on the day, tied the game with a unassisted tally with 21:53 to play in the first round game. Goalie Amy Tran had four saves for North Carolina.
The Spartans Debbie White and Maureen Halstead each scored once for Michigan State. Goalie Mireille Evans had 19 saves for the Spartans. North Carolina will next play Temple tomorrow in the championship game at 1:30 p.m., while Michigan State will take on Louisville in the consolation game at 11:00 a.m..
