Tar Heels Top Iowa 5-0 In Field Hockey

PHILADELPHIA-The University of North Carolina field hockey team improved to 4-0 on the season and advanced to the championship game of the Temple Invitational Saturday with a 5-0 shutout of Iowa. The Tar Heels, who have won seven consecutive Temple Invitational titles, will play the host Owls Sunday at 1:30 p.m. for this year's championship. Carolina's five goals against Iowa came from four different players-Abby Martin, Kristen McCann, Holly Huff and Abbey Woolley. Two more-Erin Cox and Katie McDonald-added assists. "We had a very good offensive game and I was especially pleased with the second half, when we started to roll a little more," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "We got goals and assists from a number of different people." Martin scored first, assisted by Cox, on a penalty corner with 21:55 remaining in the first half. McCann scored from the field, assisted by McDonald, 15:41 before halftime. Huff provided two of the second-half goals. With 29:51 left to play, she scored on a corner, and with 8:18 remaining in the game, she scored from the field on an assist by Cox. Woolley scored from the field with 22:52 remaining, assisted by McCann. UNC goalkeeper Amy Tran made three saves in earning her second shutout of the season. The Tar Heels outshot Iowa 18-6 and led 6-3 in penalty corners.
