Cindy Werley, the most decorated player in the history of UNC field hockey, is in her second year as an assistant coach at her alma mater. Werley was the recipient of the Honda Award as field hockey's Player of the Year in 1996 and '97. She is just the second player to win the honor more than once, following Carolina head coach Karen Shelton, who won it three times. UNC jersey No. 13 has been retired in Werley's honor. A three-time All-America selection, she took the 1995 season off from collegiate competition to prepare for the 1996 Olympic Games, where she represented the U.S. Upon returning to UNC for her junior season, she helped the Tar Heels to ACC and NCAA titles in 1996 and '97 and was named ACC Player of the Year both seasons. Three times, she earned All-ACC, All-ACC Tournament and All-NCAA Tournament honors. Werley still holds the Carolina records for career goals (84) and points (212) and the single-season records for goals (36 in 1997) and points (87 in 1997). Before returning to UNC, she spent four years as an assistant coach at Duke and one season at Louisville. Werley is married to John Baugh. |
