Kate Barber, a three-time All-America selection at UNC, is a veteran of the U.S. National Team and serves as its captain. She has been named USA Field Hockey's Female Athlete of the Year a record five times, in 2007, '06, '05, '04 and '02. Barber played for UNC from 1994-97 and was a part of NCAA Championship teams in her sophomore, junior and senior seasons. As a freshman in 1994, she was voted Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Year. She earned All-ACC, All-ACC Tournament and All-NCAA Tournament honors in 1996 and '97 and in 1997 was a finalist for the Honda Award. She started all 92 games of her Carolina career.
