UNC's Season Ends With NCAA Loss

The North Carolina field hockey team's 2008 season ended Saturday with a 3-2 loss to host Michigan State in NCAA Tournament play at Ralph Young Field. The North Carolina field hockey team has received an at-large bid into the 2008 NCAA Field Hockey Championship field and will meet Michigan State on Saturday in East Lansing, Mich. The seventh-ranked Tar Heels, 14-5 and winners of five previous NCAA titles, will make their 25th appearance in the field.

North Carolina's Britt van Beek, Illse Davids and Katelyn Falgowski have earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors, as announced Wednesday by the league. The Tar Heel trio was among 17 players honored from the six ACC teams.Van Beek, a senior from Den Bosch, the Netherlands, was named to the team for the first time. Davids, a junior from Plumstead, South Africa, and Falgowski, a sophomore from Landenberg, Pa., earned spots on the team for the second year in a row.

The setting changed but the result didn't as North Carolina and Old Dominion met in field hockey on Saturday afternoon for their second matchup of the season. Sixth-ranked UNC won 3-1 at Powhatan Sports Complex, the same score by which the Tar Heels beat the Lady Monarchs when the two met in Chapel Hill on Sept. 19. Carolina improved to 13-4 with the victory, while ODU fell to 7-12.

The list of Carolina Tar Heels that have participated in the Olympics is ever growing, but it is always a special honor to be a student-athlete and an Olympian concurrently.Katelyn Falgowski, a sophomore midfielder from Landenberg, Pa., was the only current college player to attend the 2008 Beijing games as a member of the United States field hockey team. To her though, high achievement just seems to come with the territory.

With three North Carolina field hockey players on the roster, the U.S. took first place at the Junior Pan American Games, beating Chile 2-1 in overtime on Sunday in Mexico City. Elizabeth Drazdowski, Riley Foster and Jackie Kintzer helped the team to a 4-0-1 record in international play and will have gold medals in tow when they rejoin the Tar Heel squad Tuesday after more than a week away.
