Least fun moment:
Being awakened in the back seat of the truck by the evasive moves taken by assistant coach Christine Elkins. During a snowstorm in Colorado, the trailer started to swing out on her. She saved our lives by fighting the urge to brake, instead, she accelerated and pulled the truck back out in front of the trailer.
That same year, the coaches from Tulsa weren't so lucky, and their trailer rolled over repeatedly. They escaped with minor injuries. Just two years ago, this happened to our men's club team on I-40 in Raleigh. Again, no injuries, but a great risk to the drivers and others on the highway. Sobering.
Most fun moment:
Many moments, actually, the collective memories of exploring. Some of the highlights:
* The first time I saw the Rockies
* The first time I saw "earth," a rich, red-brown soil in Wyoming
* The first time I saw "green", the greenest green I have ever seen, in the fields of southern Minnesota in July
* The feeling of slicing across Texas in the middle of the night under a full moon, when you can turn off your headlights and see for miles
* Crossing 12,000 feet elevation, and getting out to breathe the thin air
* Watching thunderstorms miles and miles away in Kansas
* Earning a respectful nod from a trucker after parallel parking the trailer at a
truck stop
* The amazing comfort of the back bench seat, a sleeping bag, and a pillow at 4AM when you've just finished the graveyard shift
* The feeling of climbing a wall when crossing the last mountain range on I-8 before San Diego, often encountering snow just hours before you're on the beach
* The joy of seeing the team, dressed for travel, coming off the plane, tired and excited all at once
* Sunsets and sunrises and everything else that happens around you when you're out in the world for 48 hours.
