Seven Tar Heels Earn Academic Honors

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Seven North Carolina rowers have been named National Scholar Athletes by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA), the organization announced recently. Honored were Christin Cotten, Lisy McIntee, Megan Mitzel, Mary Sasson, Chandler Sours, Adriann Spinks and Ruby Woodside. The UNC total of seven is the highest in program history. The award recognizes student-athletes with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher who participated in 75 percent of the team's races in the spring of 2007. Sophomores, juniors and seniors are eligible. Cotten, Mitzel and Spinks were the three seniors on the 2006-07 squad. Cotten, a public policy analysis manor from Clayton, N.C., earned the honor for the first time. Mitzel, a business administration major from Catonsville, Md., also was a first-time honoree. Spinks, a psychology/exercise and sport science double major from Francisco, N.C., was recognized for the third year in a row. McIntee, a junior and two-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection, was recognized for the second year. She is a peace, war and defense major from Bala Cynwyd, Pa. Sasson, Sours and Woodside are sophomores and were honored in their first year of eligibility. Sasson is a psychology major from Pittsburgh, Pa. Sours is a biology major from Atlanta, Ga. Woodside is a chemistry major from Natick, Mass. UNC's seven were among 31 Atlantic Coast Conference student-athletes honored, joining 14 from Clemson, five from Virginia, four from Boston College and one from Duke.
