CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --Carolina has placed a total of six athletes on the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association's National Scholar-Athlete team, which requires a 3.5 grade point average and participation in 75 percent of the season's races in a varsity boat. Of the nation's Division I programs, only George Washington put as many of its rowers on the 52-athlete list as UNC.

Tar Heels named to the team are:

  • Senior Marie "Sam" Hermitte (Public policy analysis/African-American studies major, 3.78 GPA)
  • Senior Lucienne Papon (Political science/communications major, 3.67 GPA)
  • Junior Lauren Agrella (Women's studies/international studies major, 3.81 GPA)
  • Junior Danae Ringelmann (American studies major, 3.71 GPA)
  • Sophomore Erin Neppel (Exercise psychology/sport science major, 3.49 GPA)
  • Sophomore Dana Peirce (Biology major, 3.53 GPA).

Hermitte, coxswain for the varsity eight boat, also has been named to the nine-member All-Central Region first team by the CRCA. Three UNC rowers*seniors Lucienne Papon and Claire Hozier and junior Rachel Kolbinsky*have earned Central Region second team honors.

"I'm exceptionally proud of this recognition," said UNC rowing coach Joel Furtek, whose team has just completed its second season as a varsity program. "Success in the classroom and on the water is the best description of our program that I could offer.
