Carolina Set For Intrasquad Scrimmage

March 26, 2007

The UNC rowing team will hold an intrasquad scrimmage Saturday morning at Lake Wheeler in Raleigh. Racing will begin at 9:30.

The schedule is as follows:

7:45 a.m. - Team arrives at Lake Wheeler to unload and rig
8:45 a.m. - Hands on to launch, followed by warm-up
9:30 a.m. - Racing begins

4 x 2K in mixed line-ups (novice and varsity combined)

  • We will have 5 eights on the water. They will randomly pick which racing shell they will be in to start the races. After each race, the first-place boat gets to pick which racing shell they would like to be in for the next piece. The second-place team gets to pick the next available one, etc.

Pull up on dock, switch boats and head back to the start

    11:00 a.m. - Racing ends, load trailer
    12:00 p.m. - Cookout begins
2:00 p.m. - Team departs Lake Wheeler to return to University Lake
3:00 p.m. - Arrive at University Lake, unload and rig
    4:00 p.m. - Depart University Lake

  • Interested in helping with the cookout? Please contact Carrie Komar at 919-962-8277 or komar@uncaa.unc.edu for information on how you can get involved.

  • Directions to University Lake:
Using Interstate 40 in Raleigh as a reference point, take exit 297 (Lake Wheeler Road) and proceed south, away from Raleigh. Stay on Lake Wheeler Rd., passing across Tryon Rd. Continue on Lake Wheeler Rd. past flashing yellow lights at Simpkins Rd., which connects to Lake Wheeler Rd. on the left. Continue on Lake Wheeler Rd. The park entrance will be on the right side, approximately 4 1/2 miles from Interstate 40.
Make a right into the front entrance of the park and stay on the long winding road to the waterfront. Lake Wheeler Park can only be accessed via Lake Wheeler Rd. Although there is a small bridge that passes over Lake Wheeler by Penny Rd., fishing and the launching of boats is not allowed at that location.
