Tar Heels Open Spring Competition

March 26, 2005

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The second varsity eight led the way with a victory as the North Carolina rowing team opened the spring season Saturday against George Washington, Indiana and host Georgetown on the Potomac River. The novice eight took third and the varsity eight finished fourth in the Tar Heels' first competition of the spring.

"I was very excited for the second varsity eight," varsity coach Sarah Haney said. "They didn't actually row as well as they normally do, but they raced really well. It's great for them to open up the season with a first-place in hand."

The second varsity eight was made up of coxswain Lauren Portnow, Christina Payne, Laura Rock, Beth Robinson, Emily Dondero, Lucy Barrios, Gretchen Klatte, Clara Leigh and Emily Glunz.

The varsity eight didn't fare as well, finishing last in its race. Carolina's boat was slowed by obstacle on the course - a large tree in the water - about 300 meters into the race and never recovered. "I'm extremely disappointed with the finish," Haney said. "We didn't row very well. We'll look to get back on track next week."

The varsity eight lineup was coxswain Terry McCloskey, Lisy McIntee, Cleo Washington, Maegan Wareham, Adriann Spinks, Christin Cotten, Jess Ziebell, Michelle Hall and Julie Domina.

The novice rowers were competing in their first official 2,000-meter race. "It was a good showing for our first race, but it gives us some things to building on and areas we need to improve on before our next race," novice coach Laura Baylor said. "It's a good starting point and we look forward to doing even better."

The lineup for the novice eight was was Tiffany Pierce (coxswain), Anna DeLoach, Reine Duffy, Hannah Early, Devin Hudson, Sarah Norris, Joyce Warrick, Lauren Eney and Megan Mitzel.

The Tar Heels will host Williams on Friday for a scrimmage at University Lake. On April 9, UNC will host the Carolina Invitational at Lake Wheeler in Raleigh.
