UNC Opens Spring Racing Saturday

March 4, 2008

The Tar Heel women's rowing team will open the spring season on Saturday, hosting Alabama for a morning of racing at Lake Wheeler in Raleigh. The action begins at 8 a.m.

Racing originally was scheduled for 9 a.m. but has been moved up an hour due to a windy weather forecast.

There is no admission charge for spectators.

The race is the first of two that UNC will host at Lake Wheeler this spring. On March 29, Carolina and Duke will team to host the Carolina Cup there.

March 8 racing schedule:
8 a.m. - Varsity 8
8:20 a.m. - Novice 8
8:40 a.m. - Second Varsity 8
9 a.m. - Varsity 4
9:20 a.m. - Novice 4

Directions to Lake Wheeler: From Interstate 40 in Raleigh, take exit 297, Lake Wheeler Road, and proceed south (away from Raleigh). Stay on Lake Wheeler Rd., crossing Tryon Rd. and passing through a light at Simpkins Rd, which connects to Lake Wheeler Rd. on your left. The entrance to Lake Wheeler Park is on the right, approximately 4.5 miles from I-40. Make a right into the front entrance of the park and stay on the long winding road to the waterfront.

Lake Wheeler Park can only be accessed via Lake Wheeler Rd. Although there is a small bridge that passes over Lake Wheeler by Penny Rd., fishing and the launching of boats is not allowed at that location.
