CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-The University of North Carolina rowing team fell short of its expectations at Sunday's Rivanna Romp, but picked up plenty of motivation for its offseason workouts. "These clearly were not the results we were looking for or that we expect to have next time we race," UNC coach Joel Furtek said. "This does give us good fuel for our winter training."

Competing in their final regatta of the fall season, the Tar Heels got their best result of the day in the pairs race. Duke won that race with a time of 17:20.00 and UNC finished a very close second in 17:20.01. Other UNC boats were ninth, 11th and 12th.

In the women's varsity eight race, UNC finished ninth in a time of 14:35.7. Virginia won in 13:45.7. In the varsity four, UNC finished 14th and 17th, while Virginia won in a time of 15:08.2.

After one more week of practices on the water at University Lake, the Tar Heels will move inside for winter training. UNC opens the spring season on March 3, hosting Duke at University Lake.
