Novice Rowers Perform Well In Fall's Last Race
Nov. 10, 2002
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The North Carolina novice women's rowing squad finished out its fall competition on Sunday with a successful race at the Rivanna Romp, held under overcast skies on the Rivanna Reservoir. In the novice eight race, UNC's A boat finished third overall (15:34.4) and Carolina's B boat came in sixth (6:18.2) in a 13-boat field. Host Virginia's A boat won the race with a time of 15:09.9 and Clemson's A was second in 15:33.1, just over a second faster than UNC's A. "Overall it was an awesome day of racing" said UNC novice coach Laura Fogt. "The rowers now understand that it's not fun losing by a second and they'll make sure they don't do that again. "They did just what we asked them to do today, which was to go faster than they did last weekend. I'm excited about the speed they're showing. It's exactly what we're looking for to go into winter training." In other action Sunday, the UNC men's club team took first, fourth, fifth and 10th in the novice eight race and second in the varsity four.
