BAHAMA, N.C. -- North Carolina opened the fall rowing season Saturday with racing against Duke and West Virginia at the Lake Michie Invitational. The Tar Heels raced a varsity eight and three fours. In the eights race, Duke's varsity eight took the top spot in 13:27.81, with West Virginia second in 14:03.74. Duke's second varsity eight was third in 14:06.21, edging North Carolina, which finished in 14:10.86. Duke's boats took the top two spots in the fours race, with the Blue Devil varsity four finishing in 15:01.94 and the second varsity four in 15:07.34. UNC boats took the next two spots, with the varsity four finishing third in 15:23.02 and the second varsity four just behind in 15:27.97. Carolina's third four finished ninth in a time of 16:14.57. "I felt good about how close our second four was to our first one," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "The second four really did a good job with that race. Overall, I hope this race will be a good wakeup call for our season." Only the varsity squad competed on Saturday. The Tar Heel novices will stage their own race against Duke on Oct. 29 at Lake Michie before the entire team travels to compete at the Head of the Chattahoochee Regatta Nov. 5-6 at Lake Lanier in Gainesville, Ga.
