OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - The North Carolina rowing team wrapped up the 2003-04 season on Sunday with a morning of racing at the Lexus Central/South Region Sprints on Lake Melton. Racing in their respective D finals, the Tar Heel second varsity eight took first and the varsity eight was third. The UNC novice four, racing in the varsity four category, finished third in its C final, and the novice eight was fifth in the B final. Carolina finished 21st in the overall standings with 70 points. Virginia took top honors, with Ohio State second, Wisconsin third, Michigan fourth and Michigan State fifth. Atlantic Coast Conference rivals Duke and Clemson finished 11th and 14th, respectively. The second varsity eight was the first UNC boat to race, at 9 a.m., and coach Sarah Haney was pleased with the results. "The second varsity eight rowed pretty much a near-perfect race," Haney said. "It looked really good and it was really strong for them. They won their final heat and, for the second time in the weekend, beat Clemson, which had beaten them twice earlier in the season, so they felt really good about that." Next in action was the varsity eight. "The didn't have the results they wanted, but they did what I asked them to do and put it all out on the line," Haney said. "They went out hard and fast, they just died at the end a little bit." The novice four then took its third place before the novice eight wrapped up the Carolina racing for the day with fifth place.
