Tar Heels Wrap Up Season At South/Central Sprints

May 15, 2005

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - North Carolina wrapped up the 2004-05 rowing season Sunday with a second day of racing at the Aramark South/Central Sprints on Melton Hill Lake. The Tar Heels finished the event with 51 points, 19th in the overall standings and ninth in the South region.

Carolina's varsity eight was third in its D final, the second varsity eight was second its C final and the novice eight was fourth in its B final.

The varsity eight's time of 7:05.5 put the Tar Heels behind SMU (7:01.40) and Kansas State (7:03.19). Racing in UNC boat were coxswain Terry McCloskey, Lisy McIntee, Clara Leigh, Maegan Wareham, Adriann Spinks, Michelle Hall, Jess Ziebell, Gretchen Klatte and Julie Domina.

"I thought that in the varsity eight we followed our race plan on Saturday and did what we needed to do to race to our potential, but Sunday we didn't do that," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "We didn't have a good race and that was a little frustrating to end the season. "Overall we had a good season. The results weren't what we were hoping for, because I think the sport of women's rowing really took off this year, but that makes is a little hungrier over the summer to continue to work hard."

The second varsity eight finished Sunday in 7:05.0, just behind Louisville (7:02.5). In the Tar Heel boat were coxswain Lauren Portnow, Christina Payne, Laura Rock, Beth Robinson, Emily Dondero, Lucy Barrios, Christin Cotten, Becci Foster and Emily Glunz.

"The second varsity eight had an outstanding season, and we felt pretty good about the weekend," Haney said. "There was a little bit of frustration with being beaten by Louisville in that last race, but overall that didn't wipe out what an amazing season they've had."

The UNC novice eight finished in 7:18.13, just behind Central Florida and ahead of Duke. Racing in the novice eight were coxswain Tiffany Pierce, Reine Duffy, Anna DeLoach, Megan Mitzel, Hannah Early, Devin Hudson, Sarah Norris, Chris Tommerdahl and Lauren Eney. "We just continue to feel good about the way that the novices have progressed this spring," Haney said.
