OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - The North Carolina rowing team opened competition in the Lexus Central/South Region Sprints Saturday, racing four boats in the heats and semifinals on Lake Melton. The UNC varsity eight, second varsity eight, novice eight and novice four will race Sunday in the finals.

The novice eight finished third in its morning heat to advance to the afternoon A/B semifinals. In semifinal A, UNC finished sixth to earn a spot in Sunday's B finals. "We had a great race in the morning, but the afternoon was disappointing because we know it wasn't the race we could put in," UNC coach Laura Fogt said.

The UNC novice four raced in the varsity four event, finishing fifth in the morning heat to advance on to the C final on Sunday. "We put in a good performance and gained a lot of speed since the last time we'd seen some of these crews," Fogt said. "On Sunday, we'll see crews that we've seen already this year, so it will be great to see where we stack up at the end of the season. Overall, it was a pretty good day for the novices and we're very much looking forward to the finals tomorrow."

The second varsity eight finished sixth in its morning heat to advance to the C/D semifinal. UNC was fourth in its semifinal and will race in the D final on Sunday. "The second varsity eight has put together a lot of good races, they're just getting out-pulled," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "But, they're rowing really well and they're being extremely aggressive about it. Even though I don't like where we're racing in terms of what our results are, I'm proud of them for what they're doing and how they're approaching each race and going after it with intensity."

The varsity eight was sixth in its morning heat and raced in the C/D semifinal in the afternoon. The Tar Heels were fourth in that race to earn a spot in the D final on Sunday. "In the first race, the varsity eight didn't have the intensity or fight that I wanted," Haney said. "This afternoon, however, we did so that was something to be excited about. Again, I'm not exactly fired up about where we're racing, but I like the fact that we came out this afternoon with more aggression than we had this morning."

The Tar Heels wrap up the season on Sunday, with the second varsity eight racing at 9 a.m. (D final), the varsity eight at 9:10 (D final), the novice four, racing as varsity, at 9:30 (C final) and the novice eight at 10:10 (B final).
