CLEMSON, S.C. -- North Carolina's novice eight finished third for the Tar Heels' best performance of the day as the UNC rowing team competed Saturday at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships, hosted by Clemson at Lake Hartwell. The Tar Heels finished fifth overall with 17 points, behind champion Virginia (49), Clemson (41), Duke (24) and Miami (19). Julie Domina, a senior from Cary, N.C., was named to the All-ACC team.

"We're very, very excited and very proud of our team today for our performance," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "Every single boat went out there and raced up to their potential, so we feel really good about that."

The Tar Heel novice eight's third-place finish came in a time of 7:34.3, behind Clemson and Virginia and ahead of Miami and Duke. Racing in the medal-winning Carolina boat were Tiffany Pierce (coxswain), Reine Duffy, Anna DeLoach, Megan Mitzel, Hannah Early, Devin Hudson, Sarah Norris, Chris Tommerdahl and Lauren Eney. "We're really excited for them," Haney said. "Just like we've been saying after every race, they keep making such drastic improvements from week to week and learning so much that this was very well-deserved on their part."

The second varsity eight's time was 7:20.3 for fourth place, edging Miami by sixth-tenths of a second. The Tar Heel boat was made up of Lauren Portnow (coxswain), Christina Payne, Laura Rock, Beth Robinson, Emily Dondero, Cleo Washington, Christin Cotten, Lucy Barrios and Emily Glunz. "The second varsity eight had a great sprint and finished it up strong to come in fourth," Haney said. "They did a really good job."

The varsity four, which was rowed by two varsity members and two novices, finished fourth in 8:33.8. The boat was made up by Edythe McNamee (coxswain), Sarah Low, Kristen Finch, Caroline Pinkston and Becci Foster. Finch and Pinkston are novice rowers. "The varsity four hadn't had as much practice time as many of the varsity fours that were out there, so we felt like they raced a good race," Haney said.

The varsity eight finished in 6:56.1, fifth overall. "They put everything together," Haney said. "Unfortunately, it didn't end up results-wise where we were hoping, but at the same time they had the best race they've had all season." Racing in the varsity eight were Terry McCloskey (coxswain), Lisy McIntee, Clara Leigh, Maegan Wareham, Adriann Spinks, Michelle Hall, Jess Ziebell, Gretchen Klatte and Julie Domina.

"We just feel really good about the whole day and feel like we had solid races across the board," Haney said. "We'll see all these teams again at South/Centrals."

UNC's next action will come at NCAA South/Centrals May 14-15 in Oak Ridge, Tenn.

By finishing ahead of UNC in Saturday's standings, Duke claimed one point in the Carlyle Cup race, the annual all-sports competition between the Tar Heels and Blue Devils.
