April 17, 2005
OAK RIDGE, Tenn. -- North Carolina's second varsity eight won its event and the novice eight took first in the B final Sunday as UNC wrapped a weekend of racing at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) Championships in Oak Ridge, Tenn. On calm, smooth water at Lake Melton, the varsity eight finished fourth in Sunday's A final after finishing second in its heat on Saturday. With its finals win in a time of 7:10.40, the Tar Heel second varsity eight remained unbeaten on the year. "The second varsity eight did a great job keeping their undefeated status," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "They've been working really hard and it's showing. Every time down the racecourse they're feeling really good about what they're doing and it's definitely proving in the results." Racing in the second varsity eight were coxswain Regina Elwell, Christina Payne, Laura Rock, Beth Robinson, Emily Dondero, Lucy Barrios, Christin Cotten, Clara Leigh and Emily Glunz. The varsity eight finished in a time of 7:02.9 Sunday after turning in a time of 7:24.55 in Saturday's heat to earn a spot in the A final. Racing in the varsity eight were coxswain Terry McCloskey, Lisy McIntee, Cleo Washington, Maegan Wareham, Adriann Spinks, Michelle Hall, Jess Ziebell, Gretchen Klatte and Julie Domina. "I was a little disappointed in terms of our placement," Haney said. "We were hoping for better, but every time we go down that racecourse we learn some things and get a little bit better. We're just putting it all together and getting ready for ACC's and NCAA South/Centrals."
The novice eight's win in the B final gave UNC seventh overall. The Tar Heels turned in a time of 7:27.00 Sunday after finishing fourth in Saturday's heat in 7:19.07. Racing in the novice eight were coxswain Tiffany Pierce, Reine Duffy, Anna DeLoach, Megan Mitzel, Hannah Early, Devin Hudson, Sarah Norris, Chris Tommerdahl and Lauren Eney. "We really executed our race plan well," UNC novice coach Laura Baylor said. "It was our best racing of the season. I'm really proud of the team for putting it all together and getting better each race and really being aggressive. They did a really great job this weekend and I look forward to seeing how much they can improve next week." Next up for UNC is the ACC Championship on Saturday at Clemson. Results
