OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - North Carolina's second novice eight claimed a silver medal, the UNC novice eight took bronze and both varsity boats finished sixth overall Saturday at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) Regatta on Melton Hill Lake. "I was really pleased with the performances of all our boats today," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. The day's best finish came from the second novice eight, which came in at 7:52.2 in its final, just behind first-place Purdue's time of 7:50.2. "It was really a great race," UNC novice coach Stephen Arthur-Wong said. "It was a fight all the way to the finish." Racing in the second novice eight were Sara Uribe (coxswain), Maeghan Sill, Autumn Carroll, Rebecca Aubry, Eleanor Saunders, Samantha Cabrera, Sheena Hill, Heather Wensil and Kathryn Winz. In the UNC novice eight were Shannon Wilson (coxswain), Ruby Woodside, Chandler Sours, Elizabeth Marx, Emily Williams, Meredith Brown, Katie Wood, Kayla Hackett and Lisette Yorke.
While the novice boats raced only once Saturday, both varsity boats competed in morning heats and afternoon finals. Both the Carolina varsity eight and the second varsity eight finished third in their morning heats, earning spots in the afternoon's grand finals. Both boats were sixth in the finals, the varsity eight in 7:10.8 and the second varsity eight in 7:18.3. Racing in the varsity eight were Lauren Portnow (coxswain), Gretchen Klatte, Laura Chase McGehee, Maegan Wareham, Lisy McIntee, Christin Cotten, Adriann Spinks, Laura Rock and Emily Dondero. "For both varsity boats, these were the best races we've had all season," Haney said. "Each week we progress and have a better race than we did the week before. Both races we put out there today were really good and really strong. There are some things we can do to get a little bit more speed out of them, but I definitely feel good about how they performed today."
