Host Tar Heels Race Well In Carolina Invitational
April 9, 2005
RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Tar Heel second varsity eight won both its races and the varsity eight pulled out a victory in the final race of the day as the North Carolina rowing team hosted the Carolina Invitational Saturday at Lake Wheeler. Joining UNC in the seven-team field were Cincinnati, Delaware, Eastern Michigan, Navy, Saint Joseph's and Southern Methodist. The teams raced the 2,000-meter course in morning and afternoon sessions. Skies were sunny, but windy conditions necessitated floating starts and headwinds blew throughout the course. "Overall, it was a really, really good day of racing for Carolina," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "The second varsity eight remained undefeated this season, so we're excited about that. The varsity eight had a pretty good race in the morning but came back and had an amazing race in the afternoon and learned a lot. And the novice eight is doing very well - they just keep moving along and meeting every goal they set." In the morning session, the Tar Heel second varsity eight finished in a time of 7:25.61, ahead of Cincinnati and Delaware. In the afternoon, UNC's time was 7:46.47, ahead of Eastern Michigan, Cincinnati and Saint Joseph's. Carolina's second varsity eight was made up of coxswain Lauren Portnow, Christina Payne, Laura Rock, Beth Robinson, Emily Dondero, Lucy Barrios, Gretchen Klatte, Clara Leigh and Emily Glunz.
The UNC varsity eight finished third in in its morning race with a time of 7:34.79, but came back in the afternoon to win its second outing in a time of 7:32.37, ahead of Navy, Eastern Michigan and Saint Joseph's. Racing in the varsity eight were coxswain Terry McCloskey, Lisy McIntee, Cleo Washington, Maegan Wareham, Adriann Spinks, Christin Cotten, Jess Ziebell, Michelle Hall and Julie Domina. The Carolina novice eight took a pair of seconds, finishing the morning race in 8:15.23 and turning in a time of 8:12.19 in the afternoon. Racing in the novice eight were coxswain Alexis Bates, Anna DeLoach, Reine Duffy, Hannah Early, Megan Mitzel, Sarah Norris, Chris Tommerdahl, Lauren Eney and Devin Hudson.
