UNC Rowers Third In California Cup
April 8, 2001
SAN DIEGO, Calif.-The University of North Carolina women's rowing team finished third in the California Cup grand final Sunday afternoon at the San Diego Crew Classic, behind Tulsa and Tennessee and just ahead of Kansas State. The Tar Heels staged a dramatic comeback to win their heat on Saturday afternoon and advance to the grand final, which was delayed several hours due to bad weather on Saturday that pushed Sunday's entire schedule back. "We're disappointed because we felt like we were in a good position to win the race," Carolina coach Joel Furtek said. "We were in the race until the last couple 100 meters, when Tulsa pulled away. "We came a long way not to perform the way we could have. We fought hard and raced hard, it was just a matter of executing better in the heat of the race. We didn't apply the lessons we learned yesterday." Racing in the Tar Heel varsity eight during the San Diego Crew Classic were coxswain Robin Yamakawa, stroke Erin Neppel, Dana Peirce, Layne Carey, Molly Benner, Laura Fogt, Jeanette Crets, Allison Wheaton and bow Lauren Yoder. Benner, Wheaton and Yoder are sophomores, Carey and Crets are juniors, and Fogt, Neppel, Peirce and Yamakawa are seniors. Next up for the Tar Heels is the Southern Championships, April 21-22 in Oak Ridge, Tenn. "The upside of today is that we'll get to see all those same crews again in two weeks," Furtek said. "That will be good opportunity to see if we can stick the lessons we learned yesterday."
