Tar Heel Boats Take 10th, 12th At Crew Classic

April 7, 2002

SAN DIEGO, Calif.--The University of North Carolina women's second varsity eight took fifth and the varsity eight finished sixth in Sunday morning's petite finals at the San Diego Crew Classic.

With fourth-place finishes in their respective events on Saturday, both boats qualified for the petite finals, which decide places six through 12. The second varsity eight's fifth on Sunday was good for 11th place overall in the unseeded field of 21 teams. The varsity eight, racing in the California Cup, came in last in its field on Sunday, 12th overall in the field of 21 teams.

Complete results are available on the San Diego Crew Classic web site.

"I'm incredibly disappointed with our results," UNC coach Joel Furtek said. "Fortunately we have another racing opportunity coming our way in less than a week."

The team will depart San Diego by plane this evening in order to be back in Chapel Hill for classes Monday morning. Furtek, meanwhile, will set out Monday morning for the drive back to Chapel Hill, towing the team's boats. (Follow his journey on TarHeelBlue.com.)
