UNC Rowing Places Fourth In Crew Classic Heats
April 6, 2002
SAN DIEGO, Calif.--Both University of North Carolina boats placed fourth in their respective heats Saturday morning at the San Deigo Crew Classic to advance to Sunday's petite finals. The UNC varsity eight finished with a time o f 7:11.63 in Heat C of the California Cup event and will race Sunday at 11:20 a.m. The UNC second varsity eight finished in 7:20.95 in Heat A of the JV event and will race Sunday at 10:20 a.m. The first and second place teams in each heat move on to the grand final to decide places one through six, while the third and fourth place teams get spots in the petite final to determine places seven through 12. "Competitively, it was not a bad day," UNC women's rowing coach Joel Furtek said. "Both boats put in competitive pieces. The JV was very aggressive, very intent on doing things. The varsity rowed probably their most complete race of the year. So, you put those two together and you feel pretty good about it. All in all, it was a good morning for us in terms of getting out there and applying the things we've learned." On calm Mission Bay waters under slightly overcast skies, the UNC varsity eight finished its heat behind Kansas State, Gonzaga and Villanova. The Tar Heels sprinted away from Temple over the last 10-20 strokes of the race to grab the fourth spot. "We went out and had a good race," Furtek said. "It was not, unfortunately, the great race that we needed to get into the grand final. It was a very fast race this year, a lot of speed. A lot of credit goes to Kansas State, who dominated the heat. I wish we'd been a little more aggressive earlier to get into a faster race, but we do get another crack at Villanova, who came in third, tomorrow in the petite final." In the varsity eight boat were Kim Baxter (coxswain), Layne Carey (stroke), Jeanette Crets (seven seat), Kara Kerscher (six), Ginger Jordan (five), Lindsey Wilfley (four), Lauren Yoder (three), Allison Wheaton (two) and Grace Wallenborn (bow).
While the varsity field is seeded, the junior varsity is not, putting the UNC second varsity eight in a race against extremely tough competition. National powers Virginia and Ohio State pulled out front to take first and second, but UNC held third with 500 meters to go before Kansas State mounted a strong sprint to pull ahead. The Tar Heels managed to hold off a late sprint by Sacramento State to finish fourth. "Our JV rowed against giants and pulled out a terrific race," Furtek said. In the second varsity eight boat were Kelley Gates (coxswain), Rebecca Bennett (stroke), Amy Scheffel (seven seat), Lauren Tarabokia (six), Mollie Silver (five), Emily Mills (four), Jess Ziebell (three), Holly Spain (two) and Lindsay Pichaske (bow).
