Carolina Takes On UCF And Host Clemson

April 1, 2006

CLEMSON, S.C. - The North Carolina rowing team raced a pair of varsity eight boats against Clemson and Central Florida Saturday morning, finishing third in both races at Lake Hartwell, which will be the site of the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship on April 22.

UCF won both races with Clemson in second. In the varsity eight, UCF finished in 6:36.4, with Clemson at 6:45.8 and UNC at 7:03.6. In the second varsity eight, UCF's time was 6:57.0, followed by Clemson in 6:58.9 and UNC in 7:16.9.

"I am glad that the second varsity is continuing to improve their times on race day," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "We know we need to get faster but we know we will during the season.

"As for the varsity 8, it was frustrating because we have so much speed that we are just not utilizing on race day. We know we have the speed, so we still have the confidence that we need in order to be successful this season."

Racing in the varsity eight were Lauren Portnow (coxswain), Gretchen Klatte, Laura Chase McGehee, Maegan Wareham, Lisy McIntee, Christin Cotten, Adriann Spinks, Laura Rock and Emily Dondero

In the second varsity eight were Edythe McNamee (coxswain), Sarah Low, Megan Mitzel, Eugenia Delbono, Cleo Washington, Mary Ford, Lucy Barrios, Chelsea Barth and Reine Duffy.

Next up for UNC is the Lake Wheeler Invitational this Saturday in Raleigh. The Tar Heels are cohosting the regatta with Duke.
