Carolina Sweeps Varsity Eight, Novice Four Races
April 3, 2004
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - North Carolina boats won five of their eight races Saturday as the Tar Heel rowing team took on Cincinnati, Dayton, Eastern Michigan, Louisville and host Indiana in a full day of competition on Lake Lemon. The UNC varsity eight led the way, sweeping its races, and the novice four also won twice. Carolina fielded four boats - a varsity eight, second varsity eight, novice eight and novice four. Each boat raced once in the morning and once in the afternoon in a double-dual format in which UNC battled Eastern Michigan and Louisville in the morning races and Cincinnati and Dayton in the afternoon. (The novice four was the exception, as UNC faced Louisville in the morning then raced Louisville and Indiana in the afternoon.) The day's racing took place in rough conditions with a strong tailwind and plenty of whitecaps. In addition to the sweep by the UNC varsity eight, the Tar Heels saw the second varsity eight take a pair of seconds. "It was great for both varsity boats to put together everything we've been working on," Carolina coach Sarah Haney said. "We've known all along that we could do this, it's just nice to actually do it on race day. Hopefully this is a turning point for us, now that we have one under our belt the way we want to do it." The Tar Heel novice eight joined the novice four in winning the morning races. While the four also won in the afternoon to remain undefeated against novice crews this season, the eight finished third. "Overall, it was a great day for Carolina," novice coach Laura Fogt said. "We showed a lot of speed and a lot of potential for more speed in our races still to come. It was definitely a good race for this point in the season."
