Tar Heel Rowers Take On Big Ten Powers
March 24, 2001
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-At the end of Saturday's racing in the ACC/Big Ten Regatta, the University of North Carolina women's rowing team had earned just one win, the novice eight's victory against Ohio State. Still, UNC coach Joel Furtek had no problem coming up with reasons to be pleased. "It was good hard racing and a good trip," Furtek said. "I'm very proud of the way all our women handled themselves against the bigger, stronger, faster crews from Ohio State and Michigan. "We don't like losing, but we like the fact we were able to put our peak speed up against their peak speed and hang with each of these crews for between 200 and 750 meters. That's a good indication we'll be able to take that speed and apply it very well in the coming races." Carolina's novice eight, undefeated coming into the regatta, provided the day's highlight in the morning session, winning with a time of 7:09.6 to Ohio State's 7:11.9. "The rest of the races did result in losses, but they all were good races for our crews," Furtek said. "We raced very hard and did a very good job of executing our race plan. We simply were out-gunned by two of the top five crews in the country, two crews that will be in contention for the national championship. There was too much power in those boats for us to be able to hang on." In the day's other racing, Michigan took three of five races against Virginia and the Cavaliers took three of five against Ohio State. The Big Ten boats swept the ACC teams in rowing's premier event, the varsity eight. North Carolina will compete next on April 7-8, when the Tar Heels travel west for the San Diego Crew Classic.
