Highlights Come Early For UNC Rowing
March 15, 2002
MIAMI, Fla,--The North Carolina rowing team opened with its best race of the day Friday morning when the Tar Heels took on Central Florida, Miami, Navy and Syracuse on Miami"s home course. In the morning's opener, at 8:15, the UNC varsity eight pulled out a win in a close battle. The Tar Heels started strong and built an early lead that they eventually stretched to a boat-length. Navy continued to battle, but Carolina held on to win in a time of 6:55.3, ahead of Navy at 6:58.3 and Central Florida at 7:06.14. "It was a terrific first race," Furtek said. After that, however, the day was frustrating for the Tar Heels, as Carolina failed to win another race. The novice eight came up with two second-place finishes, and the second novice eight finished second of three teams in its only race. After winning its first race, the varsity eight finished third of three teams in its second. "We still have a lot of work to do in terms of not only our rowing, but our ability to perform on race day," Furtek said. "I feel like we didn't put the pieces in place that we have. We have a lot more speed than we showed today." After competing for the first time in their collegiate careers at the Carolina Dash 12 days ago, the UNC novices raced Friday on a 2,000-meter course for the first time. "We didn't have the greatest results numbers-wise, but I think they'll take some good things away from it," Furtek said. "In particular, the novice eight managed to place second in a tight race for second place in that second heat." The novice squad will race in two weeks at the Crawford Bay Crew Classic. The varsity's next competition is in three weeks at San Diego Crew Classic. "I still have high hopes for what we can do this spring," Furtek said. "We still have a lot of heart and developing speed, we just need to be able to put it all together on race day."
