Novice Rowers Lead the Way For UNC
March 12, 2003
CLEMSON, S.C. - In racing on Lake Hartwell Wednesday afternoon, the North Carolina rowing team took a pair of seconds and two thirds against Clemson and Notre Dame. Clemson won all four of the races in which UNC entered boats. Carolina's novices had the team's best finishes of the day, beating Notre Dame in both the novice eight and second novice eight races. "The second novice eight had a great race," novice coach Laura Fogt said. "They led early and fought Clemson all the way down the course. Now they need to fine-tune parts of the race. "The novice eight was not as happy with the time. It still was great to have them beat a fast crew like Notre Dame, but they know the race wasn't what they're capable of doing." For the novice rowers, Wednesday's competition was the first on a 2,000-meter course, the standard for spring racing. The varsity boats finished third in both their races, the varsity four and varsity eight. "It was a disappointing day for the varsity," UNC head coach Sarah Haney said. "We didn't do the things we needed to do for successful races. Before we race again, we need to improve our intensity in practice so that we're prepared when we get in a race." The Tar Heels, who will spend the rest of Spring Break week in spring training, will race next on March 29 when they travel to Washington, D.C., to take on Georgetown.
