March 4, 2000

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina women's crew team began its 2000 campaign with an impressive showing Saturday morning. The Tar Heels faced Duke in the Carolina Dash, a unique three-race format of 1000-meter sprints. UNC swept all three races in both the junior varsity and varsity divisions, but was edged 2-1 in the novice competition.

"This was a great win and a great start to our season, " Tar Heel coach Joel Furtek said. " The varsity and junior varsity teams went out and raced hard and the novices did well in their first competition. Overall, it was a good preparation for our upcoming trip to California."

The Tar Heels embark for California later this week. In a nine-day span, they will have five competitions, facing San Diego State, Southern California, California-Davis, California State-Sacramento and California-Berkeley. The Tar Heels next race at home March 25 in the ACC/Big Ten Double Dual.
