March 3, 2001

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-The University of North Carolina women's rowing team opened its spring season Saturday at University Lake and came away with mixed results after a rainy morning of racing against ACC rival Duke in the Carolina Dash.

The crews competed in three 1,000-meter races in each of four classes. Carolina came out on top in all three of the novice eight and second varsity eight races, while Duke swept the varsity eight and novice/varsity four.

"We'll never say we're happy with any loss, but we got from today what we hoped to get," UNC coach Joel Furtek said. "Duke was rowing high and hard, while UNC was long and low. Our stroke rating varied by five to seven beats. In half the races, long and low won and in half it was high and hard.

"Certainly we're disappointed not to win the varsity eight. In the varsity eight, we didn't have the explosive power off the start that we needed to have to beat a very strong crew like Duke."

Racing in UNC's varsity eight were Lauren Yoder, Lindsey Hawks, Kim Dilda, Laura Fogt Jeanette Crets, Layne Carey, Dana Peirce, Erin Neppel and coxswain Robin Yamakawa.

After a trying week of practice, Carolina's second varsity eight rebounded to win all three of its races. "We changed the lineup every day this week," Furtek said. "For them to have the races they did shows great promise."

In UNC's second varsity eight were Lindsay Pichaske, Kara Kerscher, Joanne Badr, Jenny Morris, Rachel Daniels, Molly Benner, Allison Wheaton and coxswain Kelley Gates.

The Carolina Dash marked the first racing in the collegiate careers of UNC's novice rowers, coached by Jason Coffman. The novice four (Mary White, Suzanne Kerns, Ashley Shingler, Ginger Jordan and coxswain Jordana Werner) pulled out a win over Duke's varsity four in its final race of the day, and the novice eight swept all three of its races. "That boat was made up of eight women who had never rowed before August," Furtek said. "The credit goes to Jason for preparing them. It was a good day for the youth of Carolina rowing."

In the novice varsity eight were Amy Scheffel, Holly Spain, Mary Miller, Lindsey Wilfley, Leslie Bone, Rebecca Bennett, Grace Wallenborn, Mollie Silver and coxswain Kim Baxter.

Next up for UNC is a week of training in Florida during Spring Break. The Tar Heels will race in Tampa on March 10 and in Miami on March 16.
