Carrie Komar joined the North Carolina rowing staff as an assistant coach in the summer of 2006. A former rower and assistant coach at Ohio State, Komar works with the varsity program and also oversees recruiting for the team.

"We are very pleased to have Carrie on our staff," Haney said upon Komar's hiring. "She has demonstrated personal success both as a rower and a coach, and she brings mental toughness as well superior motivational skills. Her ability to interact with people will make her a great leader for the team to follow as well as a remarkable recruiter."

Komar served as a volunteer assistant coach at Ohio State during the 2005-06 season, when the Buckeyes won Big Ten and South-Central Region titles and finished fifth at the NCAA Championships. She also has directed programs on the high school and club levels since she began coaching in 1999.

As a rower, she was a three-year member of the Ohio State varsity squad, serving as co-captain as a senior when she also was named team MVP. She spent the summer of 1997 training at the U.S. Rowing Development Camp.

A 1998 graduate of Ohio State, she also is a certified massage therapist.
