No. 4 Tar Heels Face No. 2 Oklahoma For WNIT Crown

NORMAN, Okla. --- North Carolina (4-0) will travel to Norman, Okla., for a top-five showdown as the Tar Heels visit Oklahoma for the preseason WNIT championship Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. EST at the Lloyd Noble Center. The Tar Heels are coming off a hard-fought 73-67 win over No. 23 Xavier Wednesday night. Oklahoma (3-0) advanced to the WNIT final with wins over UC Riverside, Middle Tennessee and Arizona State. Carolina is ranked No. 4 in the AP poll and No. 3 in the coaches' poll. Oklahoma is ranked No. 2 in the AP poll and No. 4 in the coaches' poll.

OKLAHOMA SERIES NOTES
• North Carolina is 1-2 all-time against Oklahoma.
• The last meeting in the series came in the 2002 Rainbow Wahine Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii. The No. 22 Sooners defeated the No. 12 Tar Heels, 66-63.
• The two teams have never met in Norman. Oklahoma won the only meeting in Chapel Hill, a 94-77 decision in 2001. UNC's only win in the series came in the LMU Thanksgiving Classic in Los Angeles, Calif., in 1997, a 68-61 triumph.

NOTING THE SOONERS
• Oklahoma is 3-0 on the season after defeating Arizona State on Friday night, 70-57.
• The Sooners are led in scoring and rebounding by senior Courtney Paris, who averages 16.7 points and 15.7 rebounds per contest.
• OU head coach Sherri Coale is in her 13th season leading the Sooners.

 

 

TAR HEELS IN TOP-5 MATCHUPS
• Carolina has played an amazing 12 games since the beginning of the 2005-06 season in which both teams involved were ranked in the top 5.
• UNC is 6-6 in these games, with wins over No. 2 Duke (1/29/06), No. 1 Duke (2/25/06), No. 4 Maryland (3/5/06), No. 4 Tennessee (12/3/06), No. 3 Maryland (1/28/07) and No. 4 Maryland (1/26/08).
• No. 2 Oklahoma will be the highest-ranked Carolina opponent since the Tar Heels faced two No. 1 teams in 2007-08. UNC fell at No. 1 Tennessee, 83-79, on Dec. 2, 2007, and at No. 1 Connecticut, 82-71, on Jan. 21, 2008.
• Carolina's last win over a top-2 opponent came on Feb. 25, 2006, a 77-65 win over No. 1 Duke.
