Catching Up With Tar Heels In The WNBA

At the midpoint of the WNBA season, here's an update on former North Carolina players now in the league:

  • Nikki Teasley, Los Angeles Sparks
    Named to the Western Conference team as an injury replacement for Cynthia Cooper, Teasley made her first All-Star appearance count, earning MVP honors. She totaled 10 points, six rebounds, six assists and five steals in an 84-75 win by the West on July 12 in New York.

    On the season, Teasley is averaging 10.1 points per game and ranks third in the WNBA with 6.3 assists per game. She ranks fourth in total three-pointers (32) and sixth in three-point percentage (46.4).

  • Coretta Brown, Indiana Fever
    In her rookie season, Brown is averaging 8.8 points per game, third on the team behind all-stars Tamika Catchings and Natalie Williams. Her best game of the season came on June 26, when she scored 26 points in a 94-90 overtime win at Connecticut. Brown was 8-for-12 from the field, 5-for-6 from three-point range, in a season-high 40 minutes. Brown has had two other 20-point games: 22 against Connecticut on June 20 and 20 against Detroit on June 21.

    She ranks third in the WNBA in threes per 40 minutes (3.26), fifth in total three-pointers (29), ninth in three-point percentage (45.3) and 13th in free throw percentage (85.2).

  • Charlotte Smith-Taylor, Charlotte Sting
    Smith-Taylor, a UNC assistant coach during the WNBA offseason, is averaging 3.8 points and 3.2 rebounds. The Sting put her on the injured list on June 19 as she battled chronic Achilles problems, but she was reactivated on July 5.

  • Sylvia Crawley and LaQuanda (Barksdale) Quick, San Antonio Silver Stars
    Playing for the franchise during its first year in San Antonio, Crawley is averaging 3.5 points and Quick 3.1 points. Crawley has played in 16 games, starting eight. Quick has played in 11 games.
