April 15, 2004
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Point guard Alex Miller has signed a letter of intent to play women's basketball at North Carolina, Tar Heel coach Sylvia Hatchell announced Thursday. Miller, a 5-7 player from Durham, N.C., signed with the Tar Heels on Wednesday, the first day of the spring signing period. She is the fourth member of Carolina's freshman class for 2004-05, joining three players who signed during the fall period. "Alex is a very athletic, quick, explosive point guard and she makes everyone on the court with her better," Hatchell said. "She's come to our summer camps and we know her well. It means a lot to her to wear Carolina blue." Miller, who attends Hillside High School, has earned all-state honors the last two seasons. Her team's leading scorer in all four years of her career, she averaged 20 points, 5.8 steals, 4.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists in 2003-04 as Hillside finished 20-5. She also competes in track and field at Hillside, running the 200, the 4x100 relay and the 4x200 relay on teams that have won two state championships during her career. "I've always liked UNC and have dreamed of playing there," Miller said. "They've got a nice program and I really like the coaching staff." The Tar Heels lose two seniors, Carrie Davis and Candace Sutton, from the 2003-04 squad, which finished the season 24-7. Joining Miller in Carolina's incoming class will be Erlana Larkins, a 6-2 forward from Riviera Beach, Fla.; LaToya Pringle, a 6-3 forward/center from Fayetteville, N.C.; and Laydrillia Grant, a 6-3 center from Edgemoor, S.C. All three signed with the Tar Heels in November.
