Tar Heels Celebrate 2005-06 Season

April 12, 2006

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The North Carolina women's basketball program and hundreds of its supporters celebrated the 2005-06 season, recognized outstanding performers and said good-bye to three Tar Heel seniors - La'Tangela Atkinson, Jennifer Nelms and Jessica Sell - at the annual team banquet Wednesday evening at the Dean E. Smith Center.

Junior Ivory Latta was honored with the team's Best Offense Award and junior Camille Little received the Best Defense Award. The Coaches' Award went to Nelms and the Osterneck Most Inspirational Player Award, a second-year honor, went to Sell.

For the second year in a row, sophomore Erlana Larkins was recognized as the team's Overall Champion, for receiving the most cumulative points in all of the statistical categories in which totals are kept throughout the season.

Coach Sylvia Hatchell recognized the squad's top players in the following categories:
Best field goal percentage - Larkins
Best three-point percentage - Heather Claytor
Best free throw percentage - Latta
Most offensive rebounds - Larkins
Most defensive rebounds - Atkinson
Most assists - Latta
Most blocks - LaToya Pringle
Most deflections - Larkins
Most steals - Little
Most screens - Little
Most dives - Rashanda McCants
Most charges drawn - Alex Miller

Claytor, a freshman, also was honored for setting a single-season school record for three-point percentage. She shot 45.1 percent for the year, second in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The old mark was 40.5 percent by Stephanie Lawrence in 1994.

Mark Rosoff was honored with the team's Outstanding Service Award, and Sam and Jan Clark were named Volunteers of the Year.

The evening's finale was senior speeches by Atkinson, Nelms, Sell and manager Nora Jabbour. "These are outstanding young ladies," Hatchell said. "They mean so much to us and we're going to miss them so much."

The Tar Heels finished the season 33-2, winning their second consecutive ACC Championship and reaching the Final Four for the first time since 1994. The team set an Atlantic Coast Conference record for best start to a season at 22-0 and set school single-season records for three-point percentage (36.4), total three-pointers (248), free throw percentage (72.4), total assists (638), total blocks (190) and average scoring margin (+24.7).
