Larkins Named Progress Energy Performer Of The Week

Women's basketball forward Erlana Larkins scored 22 points in both road wins over Virginia Tech and NC State despite playing with a broken hand and is the Progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week for January 7-13, 2008. A senior from Riviera Beach, Fla., Larkins had 22 points and 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season in the win over the Hokies on Thursday. She then followed that with 22 points and eight boards in the win at NC State on Sunday. The 22 points matched a season high for Larkins, who has led the No. 3 Tar Heels to a 16-1 start and three straight victories to open league play.

Women's Track & Field, Hurdles and Jumps
Freshman, Burlington, N.C.

Freshman LaToya James started her collegiate career with a bang on Saturday as she posted an NCAA provisional time in the 60-meter hurdles. James tackled the distance in 8.37 seconds during the preliminaries. The Burlington, N.C. native cruised to the victory in the finals in a time of 8.44 in the Tar Heels first action of the 2008 indoor season.

AUSTIN DAVIS
Men's Track & Field, Jumps
Freshman, Durham, N.C.

Freshman Austin Davis nearly doubled up in the first indoor meet of the season for the Tar Heels. Davis picked up a victory in the triple jump with a leap of 49-4 1/4, just 3/4 of a foot shy of his personal best. The Durham, N.C. native fell just short of picking up two wins as his long jump of 23-8 took second place.

ALISON CLEMENS
Women's Swimming, Breaststroker
Sophomore, Staten Island, N.Y.

Sophomore Alison Clemens won three individual events and swam the breaststroke leg on the Tar Heels' victorious 200-yard medley relay as No. 10 Carolina defeated Clemson 204-96 and Rutgers 173-131 in women's swimming action January 12. Besides splitting a 28.77 breatstroke leg on the winning medley relay, Clemens took top honors in the 200-yard individual medley, the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard breaststroke as UNC improved to 2-0 in the ACC and 3-2 overall.

JOE KINDERWATER
Men's Swimming, Distance Freestyler
Freshman, Lancaster, Pa.

University of North Carolina freshman swimmer Joe Kinderwater beame the second fastest 1000-yard freestyle performer in Tar Heel swimming history as No. 15 North Carolina won an ACC battle with Clemson 168-132 on January 12. In avenging a loss to the Tigers in the 2007 Nike Cup, Kinderwater was one of the key UNC players as he torched the field in the 1000-yard freestyle in 9:07.17, 3.92 seconds ahead of any other ACC compettitor in 2007-08. Kinderwater's time of 3.29 seconds faster than his career best and he is now the No. 2 performer all-time at UNC in the event. Kinderwater also won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:28.88, outtouching his UNC teammate Yi-Khy Saw for the victory.

Ty Lawson
Men's Basketball, Point Guard
Sophomore, Clinton, Md.

Lawson scored 17 points with seven assists and no turnovers against UNC Asheville and had 16 points, all in the second half, and added five turnovers and no assists in the 93-62 win over NC State. He set a career high with four three-pointers against the Wolfpack. Dating back to the last three minutes of regulation in the Clemson game on Jan. 6, Lawson has handed out 16 assists and has no turnovers.

NICK STABILE
Wrestling, 141 pounds
Freshman, Lenhartsville, Pa.

Junior Keegan Mueller and redshirt freshman Nick Stabile led Carolina to a split Sunday. After a tough-fought 19-17 loss to No. 21 Maryland, the Tar Heels came back with their largest margin of victory since 1998 in a 48-0 win over Belmont Abbey. Mueller and Stabile both recorded a major decision against Maryland and a technical fall against Belmont Abbey at 141 and 165 pounds, respectively. The 13th-ranked Mueller, ran his record to 17-3 overall and 7-0 in duals, while Stabile improved to 14-3 on the season and 6-1 in duals. Mueller has won 15 of his last 16 bouts.
