Jan Boxill, a lecturer and associate chair of the UNC philosophy department, fills an impressive number of roles for the Tar Heels. Now in her 11th year as the team's academics advisor, she also is the public address announcer for Carmichael Auditorium games and serves as the team's color commentator for radio broadcasts of road games. As the voice of the Tar Heels, she has missed only two home games since taking over the microphone during the 1985-86 season. She served as an announcer for basketball games during the 1996 Olympics and called both of the women's medal games. She also served as announcer at the 1998 ACC Tournament and ABL All-Star game. A native of Worcester, N.Y., Boxill spent three years after high school playing saxophone in the Women's Air Force band. She played basketball at UCLA, where she earned a B.A., master's and a doctorate in philosophy. Boxill also has taught at Elon College, the University of Tampa, the University of South Florida, the University of Kentucky and the California State University at Los Angeles. Boxill coached women's basketball at Tampa from 1981-84 and was named Sunshine State Conference Coach of the Year in '84. One of 12 children, Boxill is a member of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association and enjoys singing and playing the saxophone. She and her husband, Bernard, have two daughters. Lisa, 31, is a law student, and Deb, 29, is an editor. |
