Carolina Wrestlers Win Two Weight Classes At Sharpie-Carolina Open
Nov. 24, 2001 UNC's Matt Kenny (Hwt.) and Chris Rodrigues (125 pounds) won their respective weight classes at the Sharpie-Carolina Open Saturday in Carmichael Auditorium. Coach Bill Lam's Tar Heels also had two wrestlers finish in second place, three take third place, and four finish in the fourth-place spot. Cornell finished with five wrestlers capturing first-place honors. Kenny defeated Adrian Thompson of Howard 11-1 in the heavyweight final, while Rodrigues defeated Cornell's Travis Lee 13-11 in the 125 pound final. UNC senior Brad Byers (141 pounds) took second, losing to Cornell's Byron Warner 7-1 in the final. Carolina freshman Evan Sola also finished second, falling to Appalachian State's Travis Drake 7-4 in the final. John Paul Igo (133 pounds) and Dusty Heist (174 pounds) each finished third for Carolina. Ryan Adams, a Tar Heel wrestling unattached, also took third at heavyweight. Nick Richmond (184 pounds), Jake Reynolds (165 pounds), Andrew Slack (149 pounds) and Austin Wall (197 pounds) finished the tournament in fourth place. Other winners include -- Joe Henson (unattached, 149 pounds), Andy Tieban (Cornell, 157 pounds), Josh Henson (Univ. of Penn., 165 pounds), Jim Stanec (Cornell, 174 pounds), Clint Wattenberg (Cornell, 184 pounds) and Matt Greenberg (Cornell, 197 pounds). Carolina is back in action at the Las Vegas Invitational, Nov. 30 - Dec. 1.
