Tar Heel Wrestlers Fall To Ohio 19-16
Jan. 20, 2001 The University of North Carolina wrestling team lost to host Ohio 19-16 in a closely contested battle Saturday afternoon. Three of Carolina's ranked wrestlers -- #7 JohnMark Bentley (149 lbs.), # 13 Matt Kenny (Hwt.) and #19 Nick Richmond (184 lbs.) -- won their matches, but Chris Collins (125 lbs.) was the only other Tar Heel able to gain a victory. Bentley won a major decision over Andy Reichenbach 13-5 at 149 lbs. With the win, Bentley moves to 18-1 overall and 5-0 in dual meets this year. Kenny decisioned Brad Bauer 7-3 in the heavyweight match and nearly scored a pin in the first period that would have tied the team score at 19. Richmond defeated Mark Shrout 7-2 in the 184 lbs. match and Collins pinned Mike Caruso at the 1:08 mark of their 125 lbs. match. Brad Byers lost to Anthony Carrizales 9-5 at 133 lbs., while Mike Booth fell to Shane Hartzler 8-4 in the 141 lbs. match. Chris DiGuiseppe was decisioned by Ben Gabriel 7-1 at 157 lbs., and Jake Reynolds dropped a 6-4 decision to John Wervey in the 165 lbs. match. Corey Bell lost to Luke Moore 5-4 in two overtimes in the 174 lbs. contest, and Clint Osborn fell to 12th ranked Dan Bednar 13-4 at 197 lbs.
