Carolina Wrestling Takes Ninth at Southern Scuffle

GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina's Evan Sola and David Dashiell each placed fifth individually to lead the Tar Heel wrestling team to a ninth-place finish at the 2004 Southern Scuffle at UNC Greensboro's Fleming Gymnasium Thursday. Carolina tallied 54 points for ninth, while Minnesota was first with 169 points.

Following undefeated days Wednesday, both Sola and Dashiell dropped their first two bouts Thursday. At 133, Sola lost to Cornell's top-seeded Travis Lee, 8-5, in the semifinals before falling to David Hoffman of Virginia Tech, 7-3. Sola, who now has a 13-3 record on the year, took fifth thanks to a medical forfeit.

Wrestling at 197, Dashiell lost to Jerry Rinaldi of Cornell, 2-1, before falling to Minnesota's Matt Koz, also by a 2-1 score. Dashiell also picked up a medical forfeit to take fifth place. He is now 13-7 on the year.

In other action, Bobby Shaw was 3-2 in the two-day event at 125, while Isaiah Britton (141), Kyle Shelton (157), Garrett Atkinson (165), Alex Maciag (174) and Spencer Nadolsky (Hwt.) each posted 2-2 marks.

Next up for the Tar Heels is their dual meet opener versus Maryland, set for Saturday, January 8 at Carmichael Auditorium.
