CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Freshman Alex Maciag captured first place at 174 pounds, and redshirt sophomore heavyweight Spencer Nadolsky finished second in his weight class to lead the host Tar Heels at the 2004 Irwin-Carolina Open Saturday at Carmichael Auditorium. Michigan State led the way with five individual titles in the event, while ACC newcomer Virginia Tech won two weight classes. A winner in his weight class at the season-opening Missouri Open, Maciag earned his second collegiate title with a 6-3 win over Appalachian State's Corey Pendergrass in the final. He opened with a 22-6 technical fall win over Citadel's Allen Elliott and never looked back, posting a 4-0 record on the day. Maciag, who defeated Virginia's Michael Grogan in the semifinals, is now 8-2 on the season. Nadolsky, a transfer from Michigan State, reached the final with a 3-1 sudden victory win over the Spartans' Henry Lossen in the semifinals. He then lost a tightly-contested final when Virginia Tech's Mike Faust claimed an overtime victory on riding time. Nadolsky is now 10-6 on the season after going 3-1 on Saturday. In other action for the Tar Heels, junior Garrett Atkinson took third at 165 pounds, while redshirt sophomore David Dashiell was third at 197. Atkinson won his division of the 165-pound bracket but went 0-2 in the round-robin final to take third with a 3-2 mark on the day. Dashiell was 4-1 Saturday and took third with a win over Central Florida's Todd Hauser in the consolation final. Sophomore Drew Forshey took fourth at 125 pounds after a 9-4 loss to Virginia Tech's Justin Staylor in the consolation final. The Tar Heels return to action at the Beast of the East Tournament in Newark, Del., on December 17.
