Ohio Edges UNC With Sudden-Death Takedown, 18-16
Feb. 13, 2000 CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Ohio's John Wervey earned a takedown against Jamie Groudle with 0:36 remaining in sudden-death overtime of the 165-pound bout to give the Bobcats an 18-16 victory over the University of North Carolina wrestling team Sunday afternoon. The loss snaps UNC's four-match winning streak and drops the Tar Heels to 6-5. Ohio improves to 13-4-1. The Bobcats were trailing 16-15 heading into the final weight, and the final match between Wervey and Groudle proved to be just as close as the other weight classes. The match was tied at 0-0 after the first period, and each wrestler earned a point for escapes over the next two periods. In the overtime period, Wervey swept Groudle off his feet to earn the two points for a takedown. Six matches were determined by three points or less. In the 184-pound bout, Ohio's Mark Shrout earned a takedown against Nick Richmond at the buzzer to give him a 7-5 decision. Ohio's Tim Courtad earned a 3-2 decision over Matt Kenny in the Heavyweight match, and UNC's Brad Byers earned a 3-2 decision over Brad Wright in the 133-pound bout. UNC's Clint Osborn recorded the only pin of the night, earning a win by fall against Dan Bednar in the 197-pound match. The Tar Heels schedule gets no easier. UNC travels to North Carolina State University Feb. 17 for a 7:30 p.m. ACC showdown with the Wolfpack.
