Wrestlers Spilt Matches At Virginia Duals

HAMPTON, VA. - The University of North Carolina wrestling team earned its first dual meet win of the season with a 22-16 victory over the University of Virginia at the Virginia Duals in Hampton, Va. The Tar Heels bounced back to beat the Cavs after a 30-8 loss to No. 23 Pittsburgh in the first round of the two-day event. In a close afternoon match, UNC prevailed over Virginia behind wins by Brad Byers (133), Jason Wilson (165), Corey Bell (174), Clint Osborn (197) and Matt Kenny (Hwt.). Wilson recorded his third win by fall of the season when he pinned Brian Muir at 5:00 and helped spark the Heels to victories in four of the final five bouts in the match. Against Pittsburgh, freshmen Skyler Holman and Nick Richmond scored individual wins for the Tar Heels. Holman topped James Thornton 14-3 at 125 pounds to push his record on the season to 20-4, while Richmond defeated Fabian Sciullo 8-0 at 184. UNC hosts NC State on Tuesday, Jan. 11, to open the Atlantic Coast Conference season.
