UNC Led By Trio of Freshman at SC Fall Invitational
Oct. 6, 2008
COLUMBIA, S.C.--The North Carolina Tar Heels had a successful weekend with a short-handed squad at the South Carolina Fall Invitational, winning three of the eight singles flights played at the Sam Daniel Tennis Facility.
Freshmen Luke Mojica, Zach Hunter, and Alex Rafiee won the third, fifth, and sixth flights, respectively. The invitational marked only the second college match experience for the trio, as they debuted last weekend in UNC's own fall tournament.
"It was a really good weekend," said Head Coach Sam Paul. "We learned a lot about the team, but we still have things we would like to work on."
Mojica and Rafiee also had an impressive showing in the doubles competition, securing an 8-6 defeat over the eventual third flight winners, South Carolina's Joseph Veeder and Thomas Stoddard, on the final day of play.
Notably absent from the eight-man group that Paul took to South Carolina were Carolina's two lone returning starters, senior Taylor Fogleman and junior Clay Donato. The pair were held out of play in the invitational as they prepared for All-American Qualifying, which begins on Monday in Tulsa, Okla.
