Four Tar Heels Named Academic All-District

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Four North Carolina student-athletes have earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors, as announced Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Sara Anundsen (tennis) and Heather Kendell (field hockey) were named to the District 3 University Division women's at-large second team and Barden Berry (golf) and Benjamin Carlotti (tennis) were named to the District 3 University Division men's at-large second team.

The at-large teams include student-athletes from the sports of women's bowling, women's crew, men's and women's fencing,

field hockey, men's and women's golf, men's and women's gymnastics, men's and women's ice hockey, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's rifle, men's and women's skiing, men's and women's swimming, men's and women's tennis, men's volleyball, men's and women's water polo and wrestling. To be a candidate for the honor, a student-athlete must be a starter or key reserve and must carry a grade point average of 3.2 or better. First and second teams in University and College divisions were announced Thursday for eight districts across the U.S.

Anundsen, a senior from Littleton, Colo., is a two-time All-America selection and part of the nation's second-ranked doubles team. She is 20-13 in singles and 31-6 in doubles this season.

Heather Kendell


In addition to serving as a team captain, she is the squad's Academic Team Captain and recipient of the Athletic Director's Scholar-Athlete Award. She is a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), as well as a participant in the Carolina Leadership Academy and Carolina Outreach. An ACC Academic Honor roll member, Anundsen is majoring in management and society and carries a 3.3 GPA.

Kendell, a junior from Chapel Hill, is a three-year starter for the Tar Heel field hockey team. She is a two-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Team selection and a four-time member of the NFHCA National Academic Squad. The team's second-leading scorer as a sophomore, she is the field hockey Academic Team Captain and SAAC representative, and the squad's recipient of the Athletic Director's Scholar-Athlete Award. She also is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and volunteers for Habitat for Humanity and Adopt-a-Highway as well as participating in the Carolina Leadership Academy.

Barden Berry


Named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll and the Dean's List, Kendell is majoring in exercise and sport science with a minor in chemistry and carries a 3.8 GPA.

Berry, a junior from Kinston, has been a starter for the golf team in all 12 tournaments this year and has six top-25 finishes. A member of the 2006 All-ACC Academic Team, he is the squad representative to SAAC and recipient of the Athletic Director's Scholar-Athlete Award. He has volunteered at UNC Hospitals and with the Get Kids in Action program, is a Carolina Leadership Academy participant and has been named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll and the Dean's List. A psychology major with a 3.9 grade point average, Berry is part of the UNC honors program and has earned a perfect 4.0 GPA in each of the last two semesters.

Benjamin Carlotti


Carlotti, a junior from Paris, France, played No. 1 singles for the Tar Heels in 2006-07. He finished the season ranked No. 75 nationally and was ranked as high as No. 33 during the year, when he went 22-17 in singles and beat eight nationally-ranked opponents. An All-ACC selection in 2007, he has more than 20 singles wins in each of the last three years. Carlotti is a two-time ACC Academic Honor Roll selection and spent part of last summer interning with the Red Cross in France. A business major, he carries a 3.2 GPA.
