North Carolina Honors Men's Tennis At 2006 Team Banquet

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The 2006 North Carolina men's tennis team held its annual awards banquet before a large crowd this past Friday night at the Marriott Hotel in Chapel Hill, N.C. and team awards were passed out to the 14 members of head coach Sam Paul's 2006 NCAA Sweet 16 team. The 2006 Tar Heel team has tied the school record for wins in a season with its 25-4 record.

Senior Raian Luchici of Timisoara, Romania, a 2006 All-America selection by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and the ITA Mideast Region Senior Player of the Year, won the team award for Excellence. Luchici is ranked No. 10 in the nation in singles and is one-half of the nation's No. 5-ranked doubles team with fellow senior Brad Pomeroy. Luchici also leads North Carolina in singles wins in 2005-06 with 25.

Senior Brad Pomeroy of Asheville, N.C. shared the team's most improved player award with sophomores Lenny Gullan (Cape Town, South Africa) and David Stone (Greensboro, N.C.), who together as the squad's No. 2 doubles team have a record of 26-9 this season. Pomeroy, also a 2006 ITA All-America designee, also won the team's Athletic Director's Scholar-Athlete Award.
