Nick Monroe, Geoff Boyd Garner Individual NCAA Tournament Bids
May 7, 2004 INDIANAPOLIS, IND. - The NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Subcommittee has selected 64 singles players and 32 doubles teams that will compete in the 2004 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships. University of North Carolina senior Nick Monroe has been chosen to compete in singles and in doubles for the second successive year. He will be joined by Tar Heel doubles partner, junior Geoff Boyd, a first-time NCAA participant. The singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 26-31 in Tulsa, Okla., following the conclusion of the team championship (May 22-25). Each region receives automatic entry for four singles players and two doubles teams. Monroe was an automatic entry from the Mideast Region in singles and Monroe and Boyd were one of the two doubles teams to qualify automatically from the Mideast Region. Altogether 10 singles players and five doubles teams earned bids from the Mideast Region. Bids were based on competition from September 7, 2003 through May 2, 2004. Monroe, a senior from Olathe, Kan., played the No. 1 singles and doubles spot for Carolina this year. He finished singles play with a stirring 32-8 ledger, including a 14-5 mark against opponents from Atlantic Coast Conference schools and a 10-7 ledger against nationally-ranked players. Monroe is ranked No. 29 nationally in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings. As a senior, Monroe was 8-1 in matches which went three sets. His career record is 96-42, tying him for the second most singles victories in school history with Paul Harsanyi. The pair trail only David Caldwell's 116 victories. Monroe has a career doubles record of 78-52.
Monroe and Boyd combined to play at No. 1 doubles for Carolina this year where they were 20-4, attaining a current rank of No. 17 in the nation. The duo were 8-1 against ACC doubles team. Their play was key as UNC won the doubles point in 22 of 26 dual matches during the course of Carolina's 22-4 season.
