Carolina Earns Its Highest Ever Seed In NCAA Tournament
May 1, 2007 INDIANAPOLIS, IND. - The University of North Carolina men's tennis team has received its highest seeding ever in the NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championship and will host a regional Friday, May 11 and Saturday, May 12 at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. UNC will play Big South Conference champion Radford on Friday at 10 a.m. followed by a match between NC State and William & Mary at 1 p.m. The winning teams Friday will meet in the NCAA second round (aka regional final) Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The winner of that match would advance to the NCAA Sweet 16 in Athens, Ga. UNC will also host a women's tennis regional the same weekend with the Tar Heels as the No. 11 seed. First round matches are Saturday and the regional final Sunday. Other teams in the women's regional include Duke, LSU and Marist. Carolina is seeded No. 6, its highest NCAA seeding ever. This marks the third time the Heels have hosted a regional in the past four years. UNC hosted as the No. 11 seed in both 2004 and 2006. Carolina is 23-3 and was the runnerup in the ACC Tournament. Radford won the Big South Conference Tournament as is 17-5. NC State is ranked No. 27 and brings a 20-9 record into the tournament. The Wolfpack lost in the first round of the ACC Tournament to Virginia Tech 4-3. William & Mary, ranked No. 43, is 16-11 and reached the semifinals of the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament. Ten of the 12 ACC teams made the tournament and five teams are hosting regionals. "We are excited to be in the field and to be hosting three outstanding programs at our facility," said UNC head coach Sam Paul. "These are three well-coached teams and we are looking forward to competing against us. "We hope our fans will come out to see us play on next Friday against Radford. It should be a great weekend of tennis."
